Peridot hails from an island in the Red Sea, close to the Pharaoh’s shores of Egypt. In Greek, the island was called Topazios, which is also their name for Peridot. Miners would send their singing hammers to this remote island, carefully retrieving the precious stone to adorn the deathbeds of Egyptian royalty. The island was strictly off-limits, and anyone caught there would face death. But Peridot survived the ages, with its slick luster and playful scattering of light.
